‘Be Safe, Be Seen’ on Halloween – Families Being Reminded by Glendale Fire Department, AZ

According to the Glendale Fire Department, children are four times more likely to be struck by a car on Halloween than any other night of the year. The City of Glendale wants everyone to have a “spooktacular” fun and safe night.

Promoting the message, “Be Safe, Be Seen,” the city wants to remind families of some precautions while enjoying the much-anticipated night of fun. The Glendale Fire Department offers these safety tips for a safe and fun Halloween.

If trick-or-treating, remember to wear something reflective. Note: Through the end of October, the Glendale Transportation Department has partnered with Glendale libraries to offer reflective bags for trick or treating and reflective stickers to apply to costumes. The items can be picked up at any of the three city libraries and are free while supplies last.
Drivers, please stay on alert and watch for children especially in residential neighborhoods.
Make sure costumes fit to increase the mobility and visibility of children wearing them.
Children should be reminded not to run and to use crosswalks or street corners after looking both ways.
USA Safe Kids suggests children under the age of 12 be accompanied by an adult.
Parents, please check all treats before they are eaten and report anything suspicious.
For the purpose of lighting jack-o-lanterns, use a flashlight or a liquid light that glows after it bends instead of candles.

How most of the people in United States become overweight

There are several reasons why most of the people become overweight. Maybe some of us do not like to admit it but the truth is that many people are overweight because they became lazy. Although American adults work long hours, many of us are lazy in our habits regarding exercise and eating. We live in a fast-paced society and although we should be fit for all that we cram into a single day, our choices for what keeps us going is what is making us fat.

Caffeine gets us up in the morning and often that is the breakfast that many people start off with. A cup of coffee is not a healthy breakfast. Some people will have a donut, buttered roll or breakfast sandwich from a fast food place and call that breakfast. The calories in a breakfast like that do nothing to promote maintaining a healthy weight.

When the average person begins to crash mid-morning from the caffeine high that started them off, it is usually more convenient to grab something unhealthy along with another cup of coffee to make it to lunch. Once lunchtime comes, if a person even stops to have lunch that is, they often make another unhealthy choice. Work schedules make it difficult to have the time to pick up something healthy to eat and although there is the option of brown-bagging your lunch, too many people don’t. Fast food restaurants do have healthier choices but too many people do not take advantage of the grilled chicken or healthy salads that they offer.

Eating is only part of the problem. Even if people take time on the weekends to get active, often it is not a part of your daily routine. Being that we are always in a hurry, we don’t park far away from the mall entrance and we have drive-through versions of every convenience. When we are home, we are often too busy on our computers or in front of the television to actually go out for a walk. Walking the dog around the block is not enough exercise to combat the bad diet we have consumed.

The truth is that eating healthier is more of an effort and so is making exercise a regular part of our lives. Even though obesity is on the rise, people are still looking for an easy way out. Giving up fast food and sedentary lifestyles would go a long way in changing the overweight population. There is no quick fix for being overweight. Changing your lifestyle is the only fix that will last.

- Machu Picchu – “Old Mountain”, is a pre-Columbian Inca site located 2,430 metres (7,970 ft) above sea level. It is situated on a mountain ridge above the Urubamba Valley in Peru, which is 80 kilometres (50 miles) northwest of Cuzco and through which the Urubamba River flows. Most archaeologists believe that Machu Picchu was built as an estate for the Inca emperor Pachacuti (1438–1472). Often referred to as “The Lost City of the Incas”, it is perhaps the most familiar icon of the Inca World.

- The Egyptian pyramids are ancient pyramid-shaped masonry structures located in Egypt. There are 138 pyramids discovered in Egypt as of 2008. Most were built as tombs for the country’s Pharaohs and their consorts during the Old and Middle Kingdom periods. The earliest known Egyptian pyramids are found at Saqqara, northwest of Memphis. The earliest among these is the Pyramid of Djoser (constructed 2630 BCE–2611 BCE) which was built during the third dynasty. This pyramid and its surrounding complex were designed by the architect Imhotep, and are generally considered to be the world’s oldest monumental structures constructed of dressed masonry.

- Petra is a historic and archaeological city in the Jordanian governorate of Ma’an that has rock cut architecture and a water conduits system. Established sometime around the 6th century BC as the capital city of the Nabataeans, it is a symbol of Jordan as well as its most visited tourism attraction. It lies on the slope of Mount Hor in a basin among the mountains which form the eastern flank of Arabah (Wadi Araba), the large valley running from the Dead Sea to the Gulf of Aqaba. Petra has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1985.

Great Wall of China, China
- The Great Wall of China is a series of stone and earthen fortifications in northern China, built originally to protect the northern borders of the Chinese Empire against intrusions by various nomadic groups. Several walls have been built since the 5th century BC that are referred to collectively as the Great Wall, which has been rebuilt and maintained from the 5th century BC through the 16th century. One of the most famous is the wall built between 220–206 BC by the first Emperor of China, Qin Shi Huang. Little of that wall remains; the majority of the existing wall was built during the Ming Dynasty.
